What should you do in the event of a car accident?

I would make it a basic condition for getting a driving licence that people also learn what to do in the event of a car accident. Of course, this is a critical situation for which it is difficult to prepare in advance, and we cannot know in advance how we will behave in a crisis situation. But if you have a basic knowledge ingrained in you, it can often be recalled without thinking, and can help you a lot in a difficult and emotionally stressful situation. We must not bury our heads in the sand: the figures show that anyone who drives is bound to have an accident - the average Hungarian car has an accident every 150,000 km. Mental preparedness can even save lives in certain situations!

Here is a basic list of what to do in the event of a car accident.

1.Ambulances

If you are injured, call the ambulance or ask someone to call them (104 in Hungary, 112 is the single European emergency number) If you are seriously injured, do not move, do not try to get up, wait for the ambulance.

2. Check the welfare of other passengers

If you are not injured to the point where it is dangerous to move, check the other passengers in the car. If someone is injured, call the emergency services or ask someone nearby to call for help.If your spine is injured, do not move it, otherwise lie on your side in a stable position and check that your airway is clear. If he is not breathing, start CPR immediately and continue until a stable pulse is achieved or until the ambulance arrives.

3. Go to a safe place

If you can, move to the side of the road or the pavement. If your car is safe to drive and where it is a hazard, pull to the side of the road. Otherwise, leave it where it is and drive to safety.

4.Police

Whether a car has escaped an accident with minor scratches or a serious collision has occurred, calling the police can be important. The responding officers will take an accident report and document the scene. If the police are unable to come to the scene of the accident - which is very rare - you can go to the nearest police station and report the accident yourself. When making a claim to your insurer, it is useful to have a copy of the police report.

5. Wait for help

Turn off the engine, turn on the hazard lights and use the signs to warn other vehicles to slow down and be careful.

6. Contact details

Once you are satisfied that you and the passengers are OK, exchange contact and insurance details with the other driver, fill in the deposit form. The most important information drivers should share after an accident:

Insurance company and policy number

Full name and contact details

Driving licence and registration number

Type, colour and model of vehicle

Location of the accident

Accident report form - if you don't have one, ask someone, if you can't get one, try to draw what happened.

Try to avoid getting into a discussion about who is to blame, as in many cases this is not easy to decide and can cause serious tension. Stick to the facts, draw a sketch of what happened, take photographs of the cars and the scene. This will help the police and insurers when they look into the issue of liability.

7. Cooperation

When the police arrive, try to get the names and badge numbers of the people there.Ask the police officers where you can get a copy of the accident report. Document the accident thoroughly by taking pictures of the vehicles from different angles, showing the damage to both cars. If there were any witnesses to the accident, write down their names and contact details.

8. Insurance company

It may be worth calling the insurer while you are on the spot, or you can report the claim using the insurer's mobile app, if available. If your car is damaged, your insurer can arrange to have it towed directly to a qualified body shop.

9. Physical and mental regeneration

An accident can upset even the most experienced driver, but following these steps can save you further unnecessary worry. You can then concentrate on dealing with your insurance company and recovering physically and mentally as quickly as possible. I recommend Dare To Drive training courses, after a car accident Back on track course helps you get back behind the wheel without fear.
